How to use tags on Shopify?

The Shopify platform offers its users different tools to increase the productivity of their eCommerce, such as tags, which we will explain below.

Shopify tags are used to group, search, filter, and make massive changes in the "products", "transfers", "customers", "blog posts", "orders" and " pre-orders" sections of the different items of an eCommerce.

How can I generate tags?

We can create Shopify tags in the detail pages of the sections we have mentioned above: product, transfer, customer, blog post, order, and pre-order.

From the "Tags" section, we select the name we want within the provided list or add a different one, which will be created automatically for future use of a tag with this name. Finally, we must save the changes to our tags.

To make changes to the tags, just go to the "View all tags" section in the details pages. In this section, we can add new ones, delete them, or see the list of all the tags we have in our section by clicking on "Manage" and applying the changes we have made.

In addition, it is important to remember that we can use the mass action option to add or delete tags in bulk, which will simplify our work

What types of tags are?

  1. Product: group products according to the chosen criteria. Allows you to filter products on the Products page and the Inventory page.
  2. Transfer: group inventory transfers in a specific way. The Transfers page, allows you to filter them by tags.
  3. Customer: allow you to segment customers on your information page. They are created and filtered on the Customer page
  4. Blog post: group blog articles together. On the Blog Articles page, articles can be filtered by tags.
  5. Orders: group orders with specific characteristics and are filtered on the Orders page.
  6. Pre-orders: as above, groups orders, in this case, pre-orders, with specific characteristics. These tags will be added as order tags when the pre-order is placed.

What are the advantages?

The main advantage of tags is that they help us to classify items so that we can perform mass actions, on a set of items with the same tag, which is very useful to increase the productivity of our eCommerce.

The tags are very effective, if we want to hide a category of products from our eCommerce completely because we have stopped selling those products or the season has ended, we simply select the tag that groups the products in the desired category and use the mass action to hide them.

A great example of this is how easy it is to hide "Summer" or "Winter" items at the end of the season in bulk. However, keep in mind that there are endless ways to categorize your products, so you can tailor the system to best fit your eCommerce needs.

Also, tags help us to organize our products and filter them within the search engine to help customers find a product easily. Although our customers do not see the tags we have created, these group a set of products with some common features that can be useful to filter and search for products.

Another advantage of tags is the ability to filter orders by them on the Orders page. This allows you to track which product groups are selling the most or least, providing valuable data to enhance communication and shape your marketing strategies.

On the other hand, the option to add tags to the profile of our customers, will help us in sending personalized communications, for example, welcome or reminder emails. In this way, an email can be sent automatically to a group of customers with a specific tag.

As with products, customers can be segmented in multiple ways, for example, by number of orders, shopping cart value, new users, name, city, etc. to create fully personalized messages that encourage interaction.

Therefore, the use of tags in your eCommerce will help you to manage and organize your store. In addition, it will provide you with relevant data about your business and help you personalize communications through customer segmentation.
