The Buy X, Get Y (BOGO) promotion is one of the most popular strategies in eCommerce. It not only helps stores sell out their stock but also boosts the average order value, driving more sales. By offering additional products, you create a more attractive shopping experience and increase sales volume.
In this article, we'll show you how to easily set up a BOGO promotion on Shopify with Planet.
1. Create a promotion
The first step to creating a discount is to add a new promotion. To do this, go to the promotions page and click on "Add Promotion".
A pop-up will appear with the different available promotions. In this case, to create a BOGO, you should select the "BOGO" preset.
2. Set up your promotion
1. Select the products to buy
To create a promotion using any of the available presets, you need to choose the products to which the promotion will apply. There are three ways to select the products:
1. Individual products
Manually select the products by clicking the checkbox located to the left of each row in the table. You can filter the products to find them more easily, but keep in mind that in manual mode, you must select the ones you want to include. Filtering the products does not select them automatically.
For automatic selection, it is recommended to use the second option: Advanced Filters.
2. Advanced filters
The second option for selecting products is through a filter. For example, if you want to select products with a specific tag and/or that are in a particular collection, you just need to add that condition, and all resulting products will automatically be affected. If the tags or products in a collection change, the promotion will update to reflect those changes.
Additionally, you can add a stock filter as a condition, which allows you to automatically add or remove products from the promotion based on stock levels (e.g., stock > 20).
3. Entire store
As a final option, you can select the entire store, which will allow you to apply the actions to all current and new products you create. The promotion will automatically update and detect them.
2. Select the products to get
Once the products to buy are selected, choose the products to obtain (rewards). These can either be the products selected above or different ones. If you select other products, simply follow the same procedure as explained earlier.
Select the type of the discount you want to apply:
- No discount
- Percentage discount
- Amount off per unit
- Fixed price per unit
- Free
Regarding the discount details we find:
- Method: You can choose between an automatic discount or a discount code.
- Maximum uses of the discount: Select whether you want to limit the number of times the discount can be applied.
- Cart and checkout label: Choose the text that will be displayed once the discount is applied to the cart and on the checkout screen.
- Maximum uses of the discount code: Here, you can choose whether to limit the total number of times the discount code can be used and how many times it can be used per customer.
- Combinations: This option allows you to decide whether to combine this discount with other orders, product,s and/or shipping discounts.
Optionally, you can add and customize a banner on your product page to display the discount on your products and variants.
3. Configure widget
This is the widget allowed for the BOGO promotion.

Optionally, you can add a BOGO widget to your product page to display a recommended pack to your customers.
General settings
This configuration includes:
- Title (Optional): Customize the title to align with your brand’s identity.

Display Options:
- Enable the variant selector.
- Show the "See Alternatives" button to offer more options to your customers.
- Redirect directly to the product page from the widget.
- Add a checkbox on the products to encourage more interaction.
Tip: Enable the "See Alternatives" option so customers can switch products without leaving the widget.
- Product: Highlight discounts with visible tags and choose the compare at price to emphasize the offer.
- Total: Show the final price with the promotion and customize the message to boost conversion.
- Buy Button: Customize the button text to make it more attractive and persuasive.
Fully customizable design
Adjust the colors, font size, and section rounding of the BOGO to ensure the widget perfectly blends with your store's style.
All widgets allow you to add custom CSS code through the theme editor.
4. Schedule the Promotion
When you create the promotion, the creation date will be set as the default start date. You can edit the start date and time as shown below.
